The Wool Shed Museum

The Wool Shed is the New Zealand's National Museum of Sheep and Shearing. Just around the corner from the Aratoi Museum in Masterton, the Wool Shed showcases New Zealands history of sheep, and the shearing industry. The Museum is a world class tourist attraction, drawing many visitors from the capital, Wellington.

Previously known as the Shear Discovery Centre, it prides itself on being hands-on, not your typical museum. You can touch and feel most of the exhibits, watch interactive displays and see physical woolsheds both old and new. Out the back there is even a rebuilt wool shed in the traditional style.

Wool has been a backbone of the NZ's economy for a century and a half. You'll learn why wool has been so important in NZ's history and what makes us one of the best wool producers in the world. The Wool Shed Museum showcases wool in all its forms, from carpet, to clothing, fashion knitwear and other unique uses. There is an extensive gift shop with all manner of sheep and wool related products, great for that unique gift.

Wool Facts

  • Did you know that wool is naturally fire retardant and waterproof?
  • The average Merino sheep has 60 million wool fibres
  • A sheep can grow a combined 12km of fibre in 24 hours!

While Sheep shearing is not done on site (can't house the sheep in town) you can arrange to visit a working farm to see sheep shearing in action. This is good for larger groups, and gives an authentic farm experience. Contact the Museum below and see how what they can organise for your family or group. Also a good idea if you are looking for some nature activities is the Mount Bruce Wildlife centre. If you can manage to get to the sheep museum on a Wednesday or Thursday you will catch wool spinners and weavers in person. More details on everything on show is available on the Wool Shed website:
