Greytown was one of New Zealands first towns, settled in 1854. Named after Governer Sir George Grey, the town is 80km from the capital Wellington, and 25km from Masterton. With a population of just 2000, Greytown is a small rural town that has become a popular weekend destination.

The most unique thing about Greytown is of course it's Victorian Architecture. Most shops on the main street have converted back to the original Victoria style and this is what has made a focal point for the town. Greytown claims to be the most original Victoria styled town in New Zealand.

It's not hard to see why. The town houses many buildings listed on the National Heritage Buildings list. A walk down the main street and you would think that you've stepped back in time. Yet, all the shops are operating and going about their daily trading. Its a quaint little town and certainly worth a visit if you are heading through Wairarapa.


The town has in recent times become more of a boutique shopping destination. Fancy gift shops, antique stores, and designer clothing stores have made Greytown a fancy little place. there are many cafes, so after a morning of shopping, relax and enjoy the atmosphere with a cappucino.

Greytown Accommodation

There is a surprising number of accommodation options in Greytown, New Zealand. This small town has over 20 properties, with many being guesthouses that you can stay in. The Greytown White Swan is the big hotel in town, with a luxurious experience and fine restaurant on the main street. Neighbouring towns include Martinborough (with the Martinborough Wine Trail), Carterton, Featherston and large town Masterton. When travelling through the Wairarapa, make sure you spend some time in Greytown. Don't miss the Cobblestones Museum. Its a sprawling village of buildings that house tools and objects that were a part of everyday life in this town, a little over 100 years ago. Fascinating stuff. Greytown is a unique little place, that you'll remember for its old style architecture, and quaint atmosphere.
